E92 Inner Taillight LED Strip Replacement
On BMW E92 models the inner trunk-mounted taillight uses an integrated LED strip instead of a replaceable bulb. Over time these LED strips commonly fail, usually due to poor internal connections which causes fried LED lights and PCB components. The failure is usually caused by internal PCB contact and component failures rather than the LEDs themselves, which is why replacing the PCB resolves the problem. Because the unit is sealed, BMW’s official solution is to replace the entire light assembly, even though the failure is typically limited to the LED circuit.
At the end of the page you can find YT video how to remove E92 taillight and how to install a replacement LED PCB module to fix the broken light strips.
The repair can usually be completed in less than an hour using basic tools.
Tools and Materials Required
BMW E92 inner taillight LED PCB module
Trim removal tool (if you don’t have one you can use large flat screwdriver and narrow pliers)
10mm socket or wrench
Electrical tape
1. Remove the E92 taillight
Open the trunk and remove the inner trim panel by pulling out the plastic retaining pins. This exposes the rear of the taillight housing.
Unscrew the mounting nut holding the taillight in place.
Disconnect the wiring connector and carefully remove the taillight from the vehicle.
2. Prepare the housing
The inner taillight is sealed from factory, so access to the LED area is limited.
If the housing is not already modified, carefully cut the plastic along the marked lines to create an opening for the replacement PCB.
3. Install the PCB
Locate the connection points inside the taillight and lift the two contact pins.
Connect the replacement PCB so that blue wire goes on the side closer to the main connector opening.
Place the PCB module into the cut-out section of the taillight housing.
Ensure it sits flat and aligns with the LED light guide.
Secure the PCB using a bit of glue and electrical tape to hold it firmly in position.
4. Install the fixed taillight
Reinstall the taillight into the vehicle:
-
reconnect the wiring connector
-
tighten the mounting nut
-
reinstall the trunk trim cover
Turn on the lights and confirm that the LED strip is working properly.
A successful E92 tail light repair restores full brightness and even illumination across the LED strip.
