14 & 15 Inch Style 5 Center Cap Guide

The iconic BMW Style 5 wheel, manufactured by BBS as the RZ series, remains one of the most recognisable classic BMW wheel designs. Whether you are restoring an original set or fitting new replacement centre caps, correct assembly ensures smooth operation and secure installation.

This guide covers assembly, installation, removal and disassembly of Mod-ing aluminium centre caps for:

14″ BMW Style 5 4×100 (BBS RZ) wheels and

15″ BMW Style 5 4×100 (BBS RZ) wheels

from BMW E30 as well as

16″ BMW Style 5 5×120 (BBS RZ) wheels from BMW E30 M3.

Parts Overview

The complete assembly consists of:

  • Aluminium waffle plate
  • Hexagon centre piece
  • Locking ring
  • Emblem holder

For easier installation and removal, an optional BBS wheel hex 80 mm key wrench is available. It provides additional leverage when locking or unlocking the centre caps and is especially useful on older wheels where the mechanism may be tighter.

Step 1 – Install the Locking Ring

The locking ring is the first component installed into the waffle plate.

Locate the small opening in the locking ring and the matching alignment tab inside the waffle plate.

Align these features before pressing the ring into position.

Once correctly aligned, press evenly around the locking ring until all three retaining clips snap securely into place.

A correctly installed locking ring will sit flush inside the waffle plate without movement.

Step 2 – Prepare the Hexagon

Before installation, inspect the hexagon centre piece.

The black centre insert must be completely seated inside the aluminium outer hexagon.

If necessary, simply press it in until both components sit perfectly flush.

The hexagon contains three locating tabs which correspond with the three openings in the locking ring.

Align these before installation.

Step 3 – Install the Hexagon

Installing the hexagon is easiest by working on one retaining clip at a time.

Position one tab over the corresponding opening in the locking ring.

Using gentle pressure, slightly spread the locking ring clip while pushing the hexagon into position.

Repeat the procedure for the remaining two clips until all three engage.

Once assembled, the hexagon should rotate smoothly inside the locking ring with no excessive resistance.

Step 4 – Install the Centre Emblem

The centre cap accepts standard 70 mm three-prong centre emblems, including original OEM BBS emblems.

For owners wishing to customise the appearance, every kit also includes a blank emblem holder suitable for flat adhesive emblems such as standard 70 mm BMW roundels.

Both versions can be exchanged without disassembling the complete centre cap.

Step 5 – Install the Centre Cap on the Wheel

Before fitting the centre cap, rotate the hexagon into the unlocked position.

Look inside the wheel and locate the alignment notch.

One rib of the waffle plate aligns with this notch to ensure the cap is correctly orientated.

Press the assembled centre cap firmly into the wheel until it clicks fully into place.

Once seated, rotate the hexagon clockwise into the locked position.

When properly locked, the mechanism produces a distinct click confirming the cap is secured.

Step 6 – Removing the Centre Cap

To remove the centre cap, rotate the hexagon back to the unlocked position.

The cap can usually be removed by hand.

For tighter mechanisms or frequent wheel changes, the optional Mod-ing hex key wrench provides significantly better leverage while protecting the aluminium hexagon from damage.

Aluminium or Plastic Hexagon?

Mod-ing offers two versions of the centre cap assembly.

The aluminium hexagon style 5 15″ 4×100 wheel center cap improves the original BBS construction and offers maximum durability together with a premium finish.

A more economical alternative – plastic style 5 15″ 4×100 hexagon version for center caps is also available while retaining full compatibility with the locking mechanism.

Both versions fit the same Style 5 (BBS RZ) wheels.

Disassembly

If maintenance or replacement of individual components is required, the centre cap can be fully disassembled without damaging the assembly.

Begin by rotating the hexagon until its three tabs align with the openings in the locking ring.

Using a small flat screwdriver, carefully lever each retaining clip back over the retaining tooth on the black centre section of the hexagon.

Release one clip at a time.

Once all three clips have been disengaged, the hexagon lifts free from the locking ring.

With the hexagon removed, the locking ring can also be separated from the waffle plate.
