BMW E23 E24 E28 Cluster PCB Repair

On many BMW E23, E24 and early E28 models the original instrument cluster electronics eventually fail due to leaking Service Interval batteries. Over time the battery acid damages the printed circuit board and electrical contacts, which can cause malfunctioning gauges or a completely non-functional cluster.

This guide shows how to replace both the main cluster PCB and the Service Interval (SI) board using the re-manufactured replacement boards.

Tools and materials required

Replacement SI board
Replacement main cluster board (if corroded or damaged)
Middle size (PH2) Philips screwdriver

Installation procedure (video tutorial at the end of the page):

1. Remove the cluster housing cover

Begin by removing the rear screws that secure the top cover of the instrument cluster. Once the screws are removed, lift off the cover to access the internal components.

2. Remove the gauges

Carefully remove the gauges from the cluster. The center gauge must first be unscrewed from the rear before it can be pulled out. Once the screws are removed, the gauge can be lifted out of the housing.

3. Transfer the light bulbs to the new main board

Remove the light bulbs from the original board and install them into the new replacement board.
Because the new board is slightly thinner than the original, gently tighten the metal contacts on the sides of each bulb holder before installing them. This ensures a secure fit once inserted into the new board.

Repeat this process for all bulbs before installing the board into the cluster frame.

4. Install the SI board

Position the SI board in the center of the cluster frame. The board is designed to fit into the frame like a puzzle and will align with the surrounding plastic guides.

Pay attention to the two locating notches on the board to ensure correct orientation.

5. Connect the SI board connectors

Attach the two electrical connectors to the SI board. This step may require some care, as the connectors must be aligned correctly before pressing them into place.

6. Reinstall the gauges

Reinstall the gauges into the cluster. The new SI board includes additional contact pins, so when inserting the gauges make sure they align properly with the pins and seat fully without bending them.

7. Reassemble the cluster

Once all components are installed, place the top cover back onto the cluster and secure it using the original screws.

After reassembly the cluster is ready to be reinstalled in the vehicle.
