Petrol 4 and 6 early BMW e30 coding plugs are compatible with all 4/6 cylinder petrol e30 engines, including engine swaps from other BMW classic cars: M20, M30, M50, M52, M54, S50, S52, S52… They are compatible only with pre 1988 instrument clusters which have slot for coding plug from the back of the instrument cluster.

Dash plug can be replaced, which allows usage of same cluster on different  engines. Using correct coding will allow exact readings of tacho (RPM gauge) and econometer gauges.

The coding plug contains important information about car engine. On every engine start, cluster is reading from the coding plug and adjusting gauge parameters accordingly.
