E24 E28 E30 USB Charger Install Tutorial
The Mod-ing USB fast charger module for BMW E24, E28 and E30 is designed as a discreet replacement for one of the original blank dashboard switch modules. It adds a modern USB charging point without cutting the dashboard or fitting an external charger into the interior.
Installation is straightforward. The original blanking plate is removed, the charger is connected to a suitable switched 12 V supply, and the new module simply clips into the original opening.
For the cleanest installation, we recommend taking the power supply from the radio wiring switched-live circuit. This ensures that the charger receives power only when the ignition is switched on and cannot slowly drain the battery while the car is parked.
Tools and Parts Required
The installation requires only a few basic items:
- Mod-ing BMW E24 / E28 / E30 USB fast charger module
- Supplied quick connector
- Small plastic trim tool or flat screwdriver
- Access to the radio wiring (might require special radio remove tool or you can also access the radio wiring from underneath instrument cluster)
Step 1 – Remove the Original Blank Module
Start by locating the unused blank switch position where the USB charger will be installed.
Carefully lever the original blanking plate out of the dashboard. A plastic trim tool is preferred to avoid marking the surrounding interior trim.
The blank module is only clipped into position, so no dashboard cutting or drilling is required.
Once removed, leave the opening accessible while preparing the charger wiring.
Step 2 – Connect the Charger to Switched 12 V Power
The charger should be connected to a switched-live 12 V supply rather than a permanently powered circuit.
A convenient source is the switched power wire supplying the radio. This circuit becomes live when the ignition is switched on and turns off again when the vehicle is parked.
Using the supplied quick connector, connect the charger power wiring to the appropriate radio switched-live supply and ground.
Before making the connection, verify the correct wire with a multimeter, as radio wiring may have been modified during the life of the car.
Using switched power is important. Connecting the USB charger directly to permanent battery voltage would leave its electronics powered continuously and could cause unnecessary battery drain during long periods of storage.
Step 3 – Install the Charger Into the Dashboard
Position the USB charger in the original blank switch opening.
Push the module evenly into the dashboard until the retaining clips engage.
The charger should sit flush with the surrounding original BMW switch modules and should not require glue, screws or permanent modification of the dashboard.
Step 4 – Test the Charger
Reconnect the vehicle battery and switch the ignition on.
Connect a phone or another USB device and confirm that charging begins normally.
Then switch the ignition off and check that the charger also switches off.
This confirms that the module is connected to the correct switched-live circuit and will not remain powered while the vehicle is parked.
