OBC LIGHT BAR REPLACEMENT

On BMW models equipped with the 13-button On Board Computer (OBC), the display backlight is provided by a small removable light bar located inside the unit. Over time, the original incandescent bulbs fail, leaving the display dark even though the OBC itself still works.

The factory light bar uses two small bulbs wired in series, which means if one fails, the entire backlight stops working.

Replacing the original light bar with a modern LED replacement bar is a simple upgrade that restores visibility and improves long-term reliability.

Same LED OBC replacement light bar PCB works on models:

BMW E30 – 3 Series
BMW E28 – 5 Series
BMW E24 – 6 Series
BMW E23 – 7 Series

Tools and materials required

LED OBC light bar (replacement for BMW part no. 65811375461)
Philips screwdrivers (PZ1 & PZ2 recommended)
Trim removal tool (optional)

OBC LED replacement bar tutorial step by step

1. Disconnect the battery

Before working on any electrical components, disconnect the battery to avoid short circuits or damage to the electronics.

2. Remove the radio

Remove the radio to gain access behind the dashboard:

  • For factory radios, open the small covers and loosen the Allen screws
  • For aftermarket units, release the side clips

Disconnect the wiring and set the radio aside.

3. Remove glovebox panels

Open the glovebox and remove the upper trim panel (Phillips screws).

Then remove the side panel covering the OBC area. Some movement and repositioning may be needed to get it out.

4. Remove the OBC unit

Using a small flat screwdriver, carefully push or pry the OBC panel out from the dashboard.

You can assist from behind through the radio opening or glovebox area.

Pull the OBC out slightly (a few centimeters) to access the side of the unit.

5. Remove the light bar

On the right-hand side of the OBC, locate the plastic insert.

Pull this insert out — this is the light bar that contains the original bulbs.

6. Install the LED light bar

Attach the plastic holder to the new LED light bar if required.

Slide the new light bar back into the OBC in the same orientation as the original.

It should clip into place without force.

7. Reassemble the dashboard

Push the OBC back into the dashboard until it clips into place.

Reinstall:

  • side panel
  • upper glovebox panel
  • radio (connect wiring first)

8. Reconnect battery and test

Reconnect the battery and turn on the lights.

The OBC display should now illuminate evenly with improved brightness.

Notes

  • The original light bar is a known failure point due to aging bulbs.
  • LED replacement bars are plug-and-play upgrades and eliminate future bulb failures.
  • The entire light bar assembly is removable from the side of the OBC, however the OBC has to be removed from the dash in order to access it
