BMW E30 VDO and MotoMeter Odometer Gear Replacement

BMW E30, E34, E28, E23 and E24 models equipped with both VDO and MotoMeter instrument clusters had problems with odometer eventually stops counting mileage while the speedometer continues to work normally. This is typically caused by worn or cracked plastic gears inside the speedometer mechanism. Replacing the odometer gears restores the mileage counter and can be completed with basic tools.

 

Tools and materials required:

Small philips and flat screwdriver

Installation procedure (you can find video tutorial at the end of the page:

1. Remove the speedometer from the cluster

Start by unscrewing the front part of the instrument cluster. There are 13 screws in total:
9 securing the front housing and 4 holding the speedometer in place.
After removing the screws, take off the front housing and carefully remove the speedometer unit.

2. Open the gear cover

On the back of the speedometer there are two screws securing the plastic cover that protects the odometer gears. Remove these screws and lift the cover.

3. Remove the broken gears

Inside you will find the damaged odometer gears. Remove any broken pieces and clean the area to remove dust or old grease before installing the new gears.

4. Install the replacement gears

Install the new gears in the correct order, starting with the smallest gear and working up to the larger ones. Make sure each gear is seated properly on its shaft.

5. Check gear operation

Rotate the small white drive gear several times by hand. The mileage counter should begin to move, confirming the gears are installed correctly.

6. Reassemble the cluster

Once the gears are working correctly, reinstall the plastic gear cover and secure it with the two screws. Place the speedometer back into the cluster housing and reinstall the 13 screws removed earlier.
