BMW E39 Cluster Tab Repair
On many BMW E39 models the lower mounting tabs of the instrument cluster become brittle with age and often crack or break off when the cluster is removed. Once the mounting points fail, the cluster may no longer sit securely in the dashboard and can move when driving.
Tools and materials required:
BMW E39 instrument cluster tab repair kit
Two-component epoxy adhesive
Side cutters or clippers
Sandpaper (recommended)
Installation procedure (you can find video tutorial at the end of the page:
1. Test fit the repair tabs
Begin by placing the replacement tabs onto the cluster housing where the original mounting tabs were located. This dry-fit step ensures the tabs sit correctly before any adhesive is applied.
2. Trim excess plastic if required
Depending on the condition of the cluster housing, small remnants of the original tabs may remain. If the repair tabs do not sit flush, carefully remove the excess plastic using clippers until the tabs fit properly.
3. Prepare the bonding surface
For best results lightly sand the contact surfaces on the cluster housing. This improves adhesion and ensures a stronger bond once the glue is applied.
4. Mix the epoxy adhesive
Prepare the two-component epoxy glue according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Mixing for roughly 60–90 seconds usually ensures the adhesive is properly combined.
5. Glue the repair tabs in place
Apply a small amount of epoxy either to the repair tab or directly to the cluster housing. Position the tab in the correct location and press it firmly into place.
Repeat the process for the remaining tabs if more than one mounting point has broken.
6. Allow the adhesive to cure
Leave the assembly undisturbed until the epoxy has fully hardened. Curing time depends on the adhesive used, but allowing sufficient time ensures the repair tabs are securely bonded.
7. Reinstall the instrument cluster
Once the adhesive has cured, reinstall the instrument cluster into the dashboard using the newly restored mounting points.
